I'm back

I've been gone for a while, but I've decided to post something new at least once per day. It's 2010, and we're off to a rocky start, thus far. We're currently dealing with a disaster that has devastated the small Republic of Haiti. I've been watching a lot of the media coverage and I've absolutely never seen anything like this before.
One thing that's disappointed me is that someone that I personally know said that she didn't understand why we're helping Haiti. She said that it's not our responsibility. This person happens to be from
Louisiana (although she has not lived there for years) and she said that we weren't "doing all of this" during Katrina. What are we doing now? We're doing the best we can, but it's not like we've cleaned up the entire
island... We're doing what's right. The Haitian people live in one of the poorest countries in the world. If we don't help them, who will? Do we just sit back and watch everyone die?
I'll be the 1st one to admit: we were way too slow responding to Katrina and we all know that things could've been handled differently. BUT, we have a new President, now, and we've completely learned our lesson. I wanna live in a country that does what's right, so I'm glad I live here. I really didn't feel comfortable having this conversation with my friend. It actually made me question what we had in common. I've never compared catastrophes before.... that earthquake wasn't as bad as that tornado; etc... How horrible is that? Who does that? A catastrophe is a catastrophe. Lives were lost and people's families were impacted and that's all that matters.
All I can do is pray for this friend. In the words of Kanye, "How could you be so heartless".
